The Pipe Band

An article reproduced from the Mercury & Advertiser on 8th October 1972 to celebrate the 21st birthday of the Pipe Band.

Formed in 1952/53 by Pipe Major B.D.Campbell the band has flourished while others in the Glasgow Battalion have faded away. The band was noted in these days to have won the Cathcart District Shoesmith trophy 13 times. Rivals included the 128th from Williamwood, the 223rd from Greenbank and the 83rd from Cathcart South.

The band has played over the years at many major events, The Cowal Games, Shotts, Carluke Highland Games, the Kelvin Hall, and on TV at Dundee Ice Rink. A number of members have also played at special events.

On the left of the photo is Bert Campbell. Andrew Melvin pictured on the right later became Pipe Major for the 128th Williamwood. Others in the photo include: Alan McDonald (bass drummer); Pipers Ross McAldine, Graeme Soutar, 2 Nisbet brothers - Stuart and Gordon, Douglas Baillie, Colin Maclean, Alistair Jessiman, Hamish MacDonaldand Hector Crawford; drummers Brian Dobson, Gavin Hunter, John Nicolson, and Graham Robertson.

The trophies displayed are the Cathcart District Shoesmith Trophy (centre) and the District Piping trophy (centre) won by Stuart Nisbet and the District Drumming Shield (left) won by Graham Robertson and the previous year by Brian Dobson
